Sebastian Thomas, Rhode Island basketball guard, enters transfer portal

Sebastian Thomas became the latest University of Rhode Island player to enter the transfer portal on Saturday.

Verbal Commits reported the former Bishop Hendricken star will explore his options and consider a move away from the Rams after two seasons.

Thomas started 13 of 32 games for URI in 2022-23, posting 5.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. He played a shade over eight minutes per game during what was a planned redshirt campaign as a true freshman.

Thomas bookended his second college season with starts in his first six games and his last seven. He notched a double-double to help coach Archie Miller land his first victory on the sidelines with the Rams, collecting 13 points and 10 assists to help drop Stony Brook. Thomas also hit for a career-high 16 points in a tight road loss at Fordham and 11 points in a road victory at Loyola Chicago.

Thomas carried a top-150 assist rate nationally — he was a top-15 Atlantic 10 player in that category per KenPom.com. He played at least 29 minutes in each of his last seven games and took on a larger backcourt role after Brayon Freeman was dismissed from the team. Thomas was one of five holdovers from previous coach David Cox's tenure.

Thomas joins fellow guard Ishmael Leggett and forward Abdou Samb among URI players currently in the portal. The Rams have signed a pair of freshman guards in Connor Dubsky and Cam Estevez and figure to be active with potential outside help both via transfer and through the junior college ranks. URI was just 9-22 this past season, dropping all but one of its final 10 games.

Thomas was a standout with the Hawks who also developed his game with the grassroots program RI Elite. He also had an offer from Siena and would have generated more interest with a planned prep year in 2021-22. The Rams asked him to enroll immediately and provide them with what turned out to be some additional guard depth.
