SEC baseball has a new 10-run rule. Will it affect Florida State's game against Florida?

While a new rule implemented in the Southeastern Conference is in play for all SEC baseball games, non-conference play has wiggle room.

So what does that mean when the Seminoles (12-8) take on the No. 3 Gators (18-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dick Howser Stadium?

According to the SEC statement released at the time of the new rule's announcement: "The SEC will also implement a 10-run rule for conference games. The policy stipulates that a contest shall be stopped after seven innings if one team is ahead by at least 10 runs, in accordance with NCAA playing rules. The 10-run rule shall also be utilized for all non-conference competitions with the consent of the coach of the non-conference opponent. If the coach of the non-conference opponent does not consent, the game shall be played in its entirety consistent with NCAA playing rules."

The Seminoles and first-year head coach Link Jarrett have opted against the run rule. So in the case that either team leads by 10 or more runs following the seventh inning, the game will continue.

Jarret talked about the SEC rule and what it means for baseball following Sunday's series finale against Boston College.

"It's a tricky thing to get used to," Jarrett said. "They asked us as coaches if that was something we wanted to do league-wide. We said no.

"It's sometimes an awkward conversation to have because which side of that are you looking at? Sometimes, yeah, you would like to end the game. Then there are the other times.

"I think we came back from nine against that team a couple of years ago, in one of the craziest games I've ever seen. You're so close to that game being over and when do you want to risk (it?).

"Statistically, I don't know the comebacks that have occurred in this thing from down 10. But sometimes it's a difficult decision and conversation to have when you're not quite sure."

Tuesday will mark the first of three games between Florida State and Florida this season.

The two teams will square off at 7 p.m. on March 28 in Jacksonville, which will be a home game for FSU and then again at 6 p.m. on April 11 in Gainesville.

The Gators took two out of three contests last season. Florida State leads the all-time series 131–124–1.
