Welcome to SEC Unfiltered, the USA TODAY NETWORK's newsletter on SEC sports. Look for this newsletter in your inbox every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Today, LSU reporter Koki Riley takes over:

Five-star quarterback Arch Manning told On3 Sports on Monday that he plans on visiting LSU football for a practice and a game this fall.

Manning, the No. 1 recruit in the nation according to 247Sports Composite, is the nephew of Super Bowl champions Peyton and Eli Manning and the grandson of New Orleans Saints legend Archie Manning. He led Isidore Newman to the Division III state semifinals this past season and threw for 1,913 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2021.

"Coach (Brian) Kelly knows how to win … he’s won everywhere he goes pretty much," Manning told On3 Sports. "I have a former teammate, Bo (Bordelon), so he’s going up there this summer and I want to check him out, see how he does in practice and I’ll probably go up there for a game.”

Here's a look at what kind of impact Manning could make on LSU's quarterback room and how this year's competition at the position would affect his potential addition.

Potential impact

If Manning went to LSU, he would become the highest-rated quarterback recruit in school history and the first five-star recruit at the position to sign since Russell Shepard in 2009. Despite his uncles and father being born and raised in Louisiana, Arch would also become the first Manning to come to LSU.

In 2023, Manning would have a chance to fight for the starting job with Garrett Nussmeier, Walker Howard and potentially Jayden Daniels. There's also sixth-year senior Myles Brennan, but he is out of eligibility after this season.

Both Nussmeier and Howard are former top 100 recruits in their own right, as Nussmeier will be in his third season and Howard in his second by 2023. Daniels is a senior this season but has another year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic year in 2020.

How this year's LSU QB battle affects Manning's impact

Much of Manning's chances of making an early impact at LSU depends on what happens with its quarterback situation this fall.

The best odds for Manning to start in Year 1 is if Daniels wins the job in 2022. With a solid season against SEC competition, Daniels would then likely enter the NFL Draft at the end of the year. And with Brennan having run out of eligibility, it would leave just Nussmeier and Howard to fight with Manning for the starting job in 2023.

Brennan or Nussmeier winning the job would complicate matters a bit if Manning were to sign with LSU. Either scenario could cause Daniels to stay for his fifth season. And in the case of Nussmeier becoming the starter, it would likely be his job in 2023 if he had already played well enough to maintain the spot in 2022 as a younger player.
