Second annual Back-to-School Bash in Morenci aims to prepare students for school

MORENCI — A handful of organizations within the Morenci area are for a second consecutive year ensuring all students heading back to the classroom have the school supplies needed to make the upcoming school year a success.

Morenci’s second annual Back-to-School Bash is scheduled for this week from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, along the streets of downtown Morenci.

The back-to-school event is coordinated through the efforts of Seneca Community Church, the city of Morenci, Morenci Area Schools, the Kiwanis Club of Morenci and the Adrian Meijer store.

To make the downtown bash a fun event, organizers have planned family-friendly games, participation from local vendors and crafters and booths showcasing Morenci school clubs and teams. Morenci fire and police vehicles will be on display, and a dunk tank will feature prominent members of the schools and city.

The big draw of the event is the free school supply giveaway.

Last year’s inaugural Back-to-School Bash packed the downtown with families and people of all ages wanting to check out the community event and collect some school supplies. At least 40 vendors, businesses and school groups offered goods and services.

For this year, Kiwanis, the city and Premier Bank, 211 W. Main St., have been collecting school supplies for most of the summer. Supplies can still be donated at Premier Bank or monetary donations can be sent through PayPal to @MorenciKiwanis. Monetary donations are also accepted in person at Premier Bank.

“Even if you don't have school-age children, you're welcome to come to the Morenci Back-to-School Bash and experience the community coming together to celebrate the upcoming school year,” a news release from the city of Morenci said.

Food at the downtown bash will be prepared and served by employees of the Morenci schools cafeteria staff.
