Second best brunch spot in Louisiana is coming to one of the best spots in South MS
Fat Spoon Cafe has three locations in Louisiana and a fourth version of the restaurant will open soon on the Mississippi Coast.
The menu will be the same as the three other Fat Spoon Cafes in Covington and Mandeville, Louisiana.
The setting at 1013 Government St. in Ocean Springs is just where residents and visitors are looking for something healthy or a total splurge.
The restaurant will debut in a few weeks, said owner Sonny Garcia, and will serve breakfast, lunch, brunch and cocktails.
“I think it will be well received,” Garcia said of his Mississippi restaurant.
“We’ve done well with the places in Louisiana,” he said. So well that Fat Spoon was listed — second to Brennan’s — as one of the 10 Best Brunch Spots in Louisiana by “Best Things in Louisiana.”
Fat Spoon stands out by being different, according to the company website.
Customers can order their famous shrimp and grits with a cajun cream sauce, their avocado toast on a thick slice of wheatberry bread or go vegetarian and low carb with a garden or Greek omelet.
The breakfast menu has an unexpected variety with its breakfast quesadilla or Belgian waffles with pecans or strawberries. Fried catfish is a Mississippi favorite and a taste of New Orleans comes with beignet sticks or a boudin scrambler.
The ultimate is a Fat Spoon Stacker that layers breakfast potatoes, a choice of country fried steak, pulled pork or corned beef, then two eggs, cheese, grilled peppers and onions and finally white country gravy.
The flip side of the menu lists lunch plates, burgers, salads and specialty sandwiches, like The Cuban, a hot sausage po-boy and The Real Reuben.
The restaurant is large and for those who like to people watch, “We have a really nice deck outside,” he said, complete with a white picket fence separating it from the busy sidewalk where people wander between downtown shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Garcia said he plans occasional entertainment once the restaurant is up and running, and he has heaters to make the deck comfortable in the cooler weather.
