Second COVID boosters: Who's eligible and where to go in Lansing

Time to roll up your sleeves again: The nation's top health agencies are advising a second COVID booster for a large swathe of Americans.

The Federal Drug Administration last week authorized a second booster dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, the fourth round of vaccinations against COVID-19.

The CDC recommends a second booster of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for anyone 50 years or older and immunocompromised people 12 years or older at least four months out from their first booster dose.

People who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are also now eligible for a second Pfizer or Moderna booster four months out from their last dose.

"This is especially important for those 65 and older and those 50 and older with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk for severe disease from COVID-19 as they are the most likely to benefit from receiving an additional booster dose at this time," CDC Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky said in a statement accompanying the recommendation.

The second booster rollout comes as vaccinations have slowed locally. Sparrow ended vaccination services at its drive-thru site at Frandor in mid-March as demand waned and the omicron surge dissipated.

Where can I schedule a second booster shot around Lansing?

Second booster appointments for eligible people began this week at clinics and pharmacies nationwide.

The Ingham County Health Department is scheduling appointments for second boosters. Appointments take place for the general public at the Health Department's Human Services Building, located at 5303 S. Cedar St. in Lansing, or at the Breslin Center on Michigan State University's campus. Help scheduling is available over the phone at 517-887-4623 or over email at covidvaccine@ingham.org.

Appointments can also be scheduled at an Ingham Community Health Center location, reached by phone at 517-887-4517.

Sparrow Health System is scheduling second booster doses through primary care offices and its Urgent Cares/FastCare locations, spokesman John Foren said.

Pharmacy chains also are offering second booster appointments through their websites. CVS's scheduling site only allows "moderately or severely immunocompromised" patients to receive a 4th dose, but Rite Aid and Walgreens started offering additional booster appointments for anyone over 50 or immunocompromised people last week.

Kroger and Meijer are offering appointments for additional doses, though regional availability may vary by location and vaccine brand.
