Second fatal crash reported during Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Another fatal crash was reported during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as of Monday's Rally Tally report.

At about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, 2 miles west of Summerset, an eastbound 1986 Honda GLI200 motorcycle traveling on Interstate 90 swerved to miss an eastbound 2006 GMC Envoy which was ahead of it, according to South Dakota Highway Patrol spokesperson Tony Mangan.

The motorcycle hit the Envoy and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle. An eastbound 2005 Harley Davidson FLHRS Road King motorcycle hit the first motorcycle laying in the roadway. The 51-year-old male driver of the Road King was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, according to a press release.

The 64-year-old male driver of the Honda motorcycle suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Sturgis hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. The 48-year-old male driver of the Envoy was not injured. Seatbelt use is under investigation, according to the release.

The latest fatal crash ups the tally to two deaths after two reports during the Sturgis Rally.

Injury-accidents are up to 14 for the year and 45 people have been arrested for DUI, according to the report.

Misdemeanor drug arrests are up from 31 last year to 33 this year after two days of the rally.

Nineteen felony drug arrests have happened this year so far, equal last year's tally at the same point of the rally, according to the report.

Citations are down so far this year to 382 compared to 431 in 2020.
