From Town & Country

Today, as Kamala Harris broke down barriers to become the first Black person, first South Asian person, and first woman to be sworn in as Vice President, her husband Douglas Emhoff is also making history as this country's first Second Gentleman.

To mark the momentous occasion, Emhoff chose to wear a gray suit by Ralph Lauren, which he paired with a black mask and gloves, a dark tie, and a small flag pin on the lapel of his overcoat. Ralph Lauren appears to be a theme at the inauguration ceremony at the Capitol; President-elect Biden is also wearing the American designer, though Biden opted for a navy suit and overcoat. In Emhoff's case, his subdued aesthetic allowed for his wife to shine, in her striking purple coat and dress designed by Christopher John Rogers.

As Emhoff is paving the way as the nation's first Second Gentleman, it's hard to predict exactly how he will shape the role, but last year, he has left his position at a law firm to focus fully on supporting his wife and the Biden administration. He has yet to declare a specific initiative, but has shared that he'd like to work on issues pertaining to "access to justice."

“This concept of access to justice is something that I want to bring to the fore in that role. But I’ll also add, look at where we are right now. It's gonna be a lot of work for President Biden, Vice President Harris, First Lady Jill Biden and whatever-my-title-will-be Douglas Emhoff," he said ahead of the 2020 election per Politico.

"We're gonna have to reestablish trust in government from the American people after four years of lies and gaslighting and incompetence. The American people deserve better. And I'm going to do everything I can with Joe and Kamala and Jill, to help restore that trust both here domestically, and with our friends around the world. So I'm committed to doing that as well.”

Emhoff will also teach a class at Georgetown Law. “I’ve long wanted to teach and serve the next generation of young lawyers,” he said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited to join the Georgetown community.”

And while Emhoff is the first Second Gentleman, he hopes to set an example that's followed in years to come. "I may be the first Second Gentleman," he said in a recent essay for GQ, "but I know I won’t be the last."
