Second Hagerstown man charged in early April shootout in alley

Hagerstown Police have arrested a second city man they say was involved in an April 3 shootout that resulted in a stray bullet hitting an innocent bystander in the legs.

That stray bullet came from a weapon fired by city resident Dajor Javon Walden, according to charging documents filed in Washington County District Court.

Walden, 19, faces numerous charges, including four counts each of attempted first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder related to a shootout near Mulberry Lofts in Hagerstown. Walden is accused of being one of the males shooting at a Honda Fit, from which three people had exited, according to charging documents.

Walden, arrested on a warrant served on April 19, is the second young Hagerstown man to be charged in connection with the shootout.

Michael Anthony Jones, 18, also faces four counts each of attempted first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder and other charges. Jones also faces gun and drug charges after police searched his bedroom and found weapons and drugs. Among the items found was a plastic bag holding about 85 grams of suspected marijuana, an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle with a shorter barrel and a "ghost gun" — a polymer P80-type handgun with no serial number, according to charging documents.

Both Walden and Jones were being held without bond Tuesday at the Washington County Detention Center.

Shootout in alley caught on surveillance video

Hagerstown Police responded to the 200 block of East Franklin Street around 7:26 p.m. that Monday for a reported shooting, court records state. An officer learned a male victim had been shot in both legs and was to the rear of the first block of North Cannon Ave. The victim was an innocent bystander who was outside a friend's home with his child when he was struck by a stray bullet.

Witnesses saw a smaller white SUV in the area at the time of the shooting, court records state. Police canvassed the alley between the first blocks of North Cannon and North Mulberry for evidence and found an iPhone and shell casings in the area.

Through surveillance video in the area, police determined Walden and Jones were in separate groups, allegedly exchanging gunfire in an alley next to Mulberry Lofts, court documents state.

Video footage shows a black Chrysler Sebring appearing to follow a white Honda Fit through town. The Chrysler turns into a parking lot off East Washington Street that is adjacent to Mulberry Lofts and "ultimately connects" to the alley where the shooting occurred, charging documents state.

The car slowly drives through the lot into the alley and stops where the alley meets North Mulberry Street, according to charging documents and Hagerstown Police. Around the same time, the Honda approaches from the other end of the alley. A passenger exits the Chrysler while another male in a white T-shirt rounds the corner into the alley.

Jones was allegedly in the group that arrived in the Honda, with video showing three people exiting that vehicle, according to charging documents.

The second group in the shooting consists of people who arrived in the Chrysler and others who came on foot, charging documents state.

The police investigation found one of the men who arrived by foot and wearing a white T-shirt was Walden, also known as "Dae Dae," according to charging documents. The man in the white T-shirt "can clearly be seen pulling what appears to be a short barrel assault style rifle from his pants," charging documents state.

It appears the man in the white T-shirt fired at least once after pointing the firearm in the direction of the males in the Honda, charging documents state. The area where the man is seen pointing the rifle is the same area where police later found a spent .223 casing.

As gunfire is exchanged, the man in the white T-shirt and another male that came from the sidewalk run back to the sidewalk and turn to the north, charging documents. The Chrysler starts to drive away as the first male that exited the car runs after it on foot. The car eventually stops and lets that male get in.

Earlier, that male was seen on camera and appeared to be armed with a handgun that he pointed at the males in the Honda with a motion consistent with firing a handgun, charging documents state. That male is not identified in Walden's charging documents.

Using footage from private surveillance cameras along North Mulberry Street, police can see the male in the white T-shirt running south on the sidewalk to the alley in the first block of North Mulberry Street and after he "completes the shooting," leaving the alley and running north on the sidewalk, according to charging documents.

Private video footage also captured a clear image of the male whose hairstyle is similar to that of a "high top," court records state.

Multiple police officers believed the male in the image to be Walden, court records state. A witness in the area during the shooting also saw Dae Dae running with an assault-style rifle in his waistband and hearing gunshots come from the area Dae Dae headed.

After police determined Walden's nickname, they found that his address matched the address the witness knew for Dae Dae, court records state.
