Shooting tied to high-speed chase, wreck, carjacking and shootout with U.S. Marshals

The shooting left 37-year-old Tywane Miller dead and a woman injured the afternoon of April 1, 2022, MNPD said. It happened in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven market that was set to open shortly afterward at the intersection of Gallatin Avenue and Maxwell Avenue.

An investigation showed Michael Dwight Clay, now 31, was in a Ford Flex that blocked in a Toyota sedan as it tried to leave the parking lot. Miller was driving the Toyota.

At least one person got out of the Ford and fired shots at the Toyota, police said. Miller was fatally shot, while a female passenger suffered non-life-threatening wounds to her jaw and hand.

The Ford then sped off and was spotted by an officer on Interstate 24 near the Shelby Avenue exit, MNPD said. A high-speed chase ensued and proceeded onto Interstate 40 east, where the Ford ran into the center retaining wall and four other vehicles. Nobody was hurt, police said.

The Subaru was discovered abandoned later that night in a Bordeaux neighborhood, according to police.

MNPD later announced charges of criminal homicide and aggravated robbery against Clay, who was at large for months after the shooting. They also announced an aggravated assault charge against him, connected with the woman's shooting.
