Second person dies after 8 shot on Detroit's west side

The death toll in a Sunday shooting of eight people on Detroit's west side has risen to two, police confirmed Monday.

"Sadly, a second person has now died," Jackson Vidaurri, public information manager for the Detroit Police Department, told the Free Press on Monday morning.

Police said that a single gunman filed multiple rounds at a home in the 11600 block of Coyle Street around 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning, striking eight people. One victim was declared dead Sunday and a second Monday.

"Preliminary reports indicated the shooter was upset with a neighbor about his driveway being blocked," police announced Sunday.

The suspect was in custody and was not known to the department prior to the Sunday shooting, according to police. Police believe the suspect suffers from mental illness, Second Deputy Chief Rudy Harper said.

Detroit Police Chief James White is expected to hold a news conference at 1 p.m. Monday, when more details will be released. The news conference can be viewed on the Detroit Police Department's Facebook page.
