Second player from Penn State has hit the NCAA transfer portal

With the college football regular season essentially wrapped up for the year and the waiting game for bowl announcements lingering, the NCAA’s transfer portal has been pretty active this week around the country. And now, a second Penn State player has reportedly been added to the collective database of players looking to evaluate their options.

Enzo Jennings, a redshirt freshman safety, has reportedly added his name to the transfer portal. Jennings, a former four-star safety in Penn State’s Class of 2020, was a deep reserve for the Nittany Lions and could flourish under a fresh opportunity to gain some more playing time with another program.

Penn State’s defensive secondary was stacked in 2021 and looks to be in pretty good shape even with the number of players expected to no longer be in Happy Valley next season. It is possible Jennings could have worked his way into more of a role in the defense next fall, although he still would have likely been utilized as a backup option.

The NCAA allows student-athletes to enter their name into a database so schools know they can officially have contact with that athlete. This allows student-athletes to evaluate all of their options moving forward, even if it means ultimately switching schools. A good percentage of players do end up leaving for another school once they enter the transfer portal, but it is not unprecedented for a player to decide to stay put and withdraw their name from the transfer portal database. But once a player enters their name in the transfer portal database, their current program is no longer required to stay committed to that player’s scholarship, where available. So there is a risk for any player who isn’t entirely sure they are definitely heading out.

Jennings is the second player from Penn State to hit the transfer portal. Tyler Rudolph, also a safety, previously entered his name in the transfer portal. As of now, it is unknown where Rudolph or Jennings will be heading next.
