Second quarter surge lifts Whips

Feb. 2—WILLIMANTIC — Travis Mangual, Jr. led all scorers with 30 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out five assists as Windham used a strong second quarter to build a double-digit halftime lead on Tuesday night in a 87-70 Eastern Connecticut Conference inter-division boys basketball victory over Norwich Free Academy at Callaghan Gymnasium.

Tyler Mangual added 20 points while Tahj Jones had 16 points, five assists and three steals for the Whips (9-4), who outscored the Wildcats (6-9) 26-15 in the second quarter to take a 43-32 lead into halftime.

Isaiah Mangual chipped in with eight points and six rebounds for Windham, which hosts Ledyard on Friday in an ECC Division II match-up.

Tony Williams led Norwich Free Academy with 24 points.

In other games ... Windham Tech had five different players combine on seven 3- point field goals in a 30-point first quarter in a 81- 39 Connecticut Technical Conference inter-divisional victory over Wilcox Tech in Meriden.

Trey Lindsey recorded a double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds) while Brody Belanger had 16 points with seven rebounds and five assists for the Mighty Tigers ( 11- 3), which completed an undefeated January with their eight consecutive victory.

Brady Marsh added 12 points and Dezmen Gaston had 10 points and five assists for Windham Tech, which led 30-16 after one quarter and 45-31 at halftime.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Brooke Provost-Spickler scored eight points for Parish Hill in a 47- 26 Capital Region Athletic League loss to Classical Magnet in Hartford.

Ashlyn Kemp and Grace Quinn each finished with five points for the Pirates (6-7, 5-2 league), who had 4- game CRAL winning streak snapped.

Sequoia Turcotte-Briggs led the Gladiators ( 8- 5, 5-3) with 29 points.

Baylee Miller (11 points) made three 3-pointers and Windham Tech (12-4) led 14-0 after one quarter in a 46-17 CTC victorty over Wilcox Tech.

Charlotte Jordan had 23 points, four assists and five steals in leading Coventry to a 43-27 North Central Connecticut Conference win at Rockville.

Phoebe Carpenter scored the go- ahead basket with three seconds remaining as Lyman Memorial edged Griswold in a 46-44 ECC inter- division game.

Carpenter, who recorded her sixth double- double of the season (14 points, 10 rebounds), caught an inbounds pass near midcourt and went all the way to the basket for a lay- up to win it for the Bulldogs (10-4).

Jenny Lopez added 11 points, five assists, five steals and three rebounds while Kassidy LaTour had nine points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three assists and Kelsey Dunnack finished with seven points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals for Lyman Memorial. Maddy Hughes scored 23 points and E.O. Smith shot 11- of- 12 at the foul line in the fourth quarter for a 61- 59 Central Connecticut Conference East Division victory over Enfield in Storrs.

Paige Raynor added 16 points — 13 in the second half — and Jill Dingler scored all seven of her points at the foul line, including going 5-for-6 in the fourth quarter, for the Panthers ( 133, 6- 0 league), who trailed 43- 38 after three quarters.

Sydney Marshall ( 25 points) and Alyssa Rossignol ( 15) paced the Eagles (11-5, 3-3).

RHAM won for the third time in four games with a 51-33 CCC inter-division victory over Lewis Mills in Burlington The Raptors improved to 11- 5 overall and host Bristol Central on Friday in a CCC inter- divisional game.

WRESTLING

Michael Marques ( 195 pounds) recorded the fastest fall of the night — 1:04 into the first period — and RHAM won eight matches by pinfall in a 66-16 CCC East Division victory at Windsor.

Michael Guerriero (120), Kyle Currier (126), Gavin Plourde (138), Seth Dunko ( 145), Jeremy Devine ( 152), Boone Swanson ( 170) and heavyweight Thiago Delacruz also won by pin for the Raptors (252, 4- 0 league), who are ranked No. 10 in this week's Connecticut Wrestling Online state coaches poll.
