The Mediazona report specifies that the first notice of the officer’s death came from the pro-Kremlin blogger Yegor Guzenko.

Thanks to leaks from Russian military databases, journalists were able to determine that Popov was 38 years old at the time of his death.

While his specific rank is currently unknown, in 2021, Popov studied at the General Staff Academy of the Russian Armed Forces and is likely to have been a colonel.
