U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is the second Cabinet member to resign in protest after the siege of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump.

That's after Transport Secretary Elaine Chao resigned earlier in the day.

In a letter to Trump, DeVoss aid the attack on the Capitol was unconscionable.

She wrote that quote, "There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me."

DeVos also said her resignation would be effective Friday.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on DeVos's resignation.

Chao is also wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

She said in an email to staff that the mob attack on Congress quote, "has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside."

Given there's less than two weeks before Trump leaves office --many aides were already headed for the door.

However, the sudden rush to exit suggests disgust among some of Trump's encouragement of supporters who went on to bring chaos to the Capitol Building.

A senior official said Matthew Pottinger, a leading aide on China, quit abruptly on Wednesday.

Another official said Ryan Tully left after that - he was a senior director on Europe and Russia at the National Security Council.

"My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power..."

The second official also told Reuters a Twitter video Trump posted on Thursday promising a peaceful handover to Biden was partly intended to stop more resignations.

They also told Reuters quote "It's not going to stop it."
