Secret Invasion might have created an MCU plot hole for The Marvels

Secret Invasion's finale had enough problems of its own without creating future ones for the MCU, but that appears to be just what it might have done.

Even ignoring the confusion over when Rhodey exactly became a Skrull (Civil War? Avengers: Endgame?) or why Nick Fury felt things were fixed enough for the Skrulls to return to space, there was a major moment in the finale involving G'iah that might have messed up The Marvels.

If you need reminding, G'iah became a Super Skrull imbued with all sorts of powers from various Avengers and villains involved in the Battle of Earth, including Thor, Drax, Thanos and Cull Obsidian. She used her newfound powers to kill Gravik and now reigns supreme as the most overpowered character in the MCU.

This causes the usual issue for the MCU where people will wonder why she isn't involved in every potentially Earth-threatening event. We're used to that by now though, so we can ignore it, but one particular power creates a new issue.

Among the powers G'iah now boasts are Captain Marvel's powers of flight, super strength and the ability to manipulate cosmic energy to name but a few. Even with these powers alone, G'iah would be super powerful.

But the potential plot hole for The Marvels is less about how powerful G'iah now is and more to do with what we know about the Captain Marvel sequel.

In the second trailer for The Marvels released in July 2023, it was finally revealed why Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan were swapping places every time they used their powers.

"She's entangled our light-based powers," Monica says of the sequel's villain Dar-Benn. "So we switch places whenever we use them."

We know The Marvels is set after Secret Invasion as Nick Fury has his eyepatch and look of the finale, rather than the Fury we met at the start of the series. The problem now is that since G'iah has the same powers as Captain Marvel, surely she should be swapping places too?

For now, this is a potential plot hole as there are possible solutions to the continuity issue, starting with the simplest that G'iah's powers aren't at the same level as theirs, meaning she isn't affected.

It is also possible that since the second trailer for The Marvels came out before Secret Invasion's finale, G'iah was kept out of the trailers as it would be a massive spoiler to see her busting out some Captain Marvel powers.

Emilia Clarke hasn't been connected at all to the movie though, so this would be an impressive feat of secrecy.

Given that the trailer shows Dar-Benn has a particular bone to pick with Captain Marvel, it's also possible that her vendetta and light-based trickery was just focused on Carol and the other two superheroes closest to her powers, rather than just anybody with light-based powers.

What's also likely – and arguably most likely – is that The Marvels will ignore the events of Secret Invasion's finale entirely and not explain why G'iah isn't involved despite her sparkly new powers.

After all, the MCU hasn't been the best at following up on Phase 4 and Phase 5 storylines so far, choosing the path of blissful ignorance instead. Remember that massive Celestial that's half out of the Earth? Nobody else does.

Secret Invasion is available to watch on Disney+, while The Marvels is released in cinemas on November 10.
