The ‘secret menu’ offers delicious creations at this Coast restaurant. What to order

If you haven’t been to Pepe’s Bosque Mexican restaurant in D’Iberville is a while, you just might want to check it out again.

Some restaurants have massive menu changes once or twice a year. But Pepe’s has a unique and very effective way of constantly updating their menu.

It’s called the “secret menu.” When a customer orders something that is not on the regular menu, its written down in a notebook and after they give it a try, it just might be added to the menu. On my most recent visit, I tried one of those “secret menu” selections, and it was sensational.

My friend, Diane Stevenson, and I went to Pepe’s for a visit recently.

We started with the street tacos, a regular menu item. Street tacos are a bit trendy these days, but there is a reason for their popularity. We ordered a platter of four, including chorizo, marinated pork, lime-marinated steak and carne asada. They were absolutely delicious. A quality that we found in everything we ordered was the perfection of the seasoning. Everything was spicy, even a bit assertive, but well balanced.

The tortillas were also some of the best I have had, and I thought they were homemade. I asked Lilian, and she said that they were a special order, and not to be found in grocery stores. They were chewy and not too thin, just right.

We also tried a cheesy grilled chicken dish with spinach and onions, and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. But the highlight of the visit was the “secret menu” garlic shrimp dish that Diane and I almost fought over.

The local shrimp were prepared with a garlic sauce and was accompanied by tomato and onion salid, offering a great counterpoint to the garlic.

History of Pepe’s Bosque

Pepe’s has been around for sixteen years, but there is nothing old or stale about this place. Owner Lilian Perez keeps this place hopping, and she knows her stuff. She has been in the restaurant business since she was 13 years old, and her dad, has been a chef and restaurant executive for many years as well. There is a distinct air of professionalism about Pepe’s.

The restaurant is bright and cheery, and the service is smart. You are not going to have to wait long to be served in this place. Not long after you sit down, a bowl of chips and a delicious homemade salsa will hit the table. The salsa is bright and spicy, with just the right citrus zest. It’s one of the best I’ve ever had.

The menu is a big one and has a little bit of everything Tex-Mex on it, as well as classic Mexican favorites. I always start by asking what the best sellers are, and more often than not, that’s what I will order. The masses are not always right, but more often than not the best sellers are a good way to go.

Make sure to check out the daily specials that are posted on a chalk board and take a long look at the menu, but if want to have your taste buds really wowed, try the garlic shrimp dish.
