The secret plan to evacuate the Queen in case of Brexit riots
With Brexit negotiations going on for what seems like forever, and the UK's exit date from the EU being pushed back repeatedly, it all feels like one big game of Deal or No Deal. That's why with so much uncertainty about what will actually happen after Brexit, contingency plans are being put in place to look after the Royal Family if anything goes wrong.
Amidst concerns of there being civil unrest and riots in London in the event of a no-deal Brexit, there are "secret plans" in the works to emergency evacuate the Queen and senior members of the Royal family, reports the Sunday Times.
A Cabinet Office source reportedly revealed that "These emergency evacuation plans have been in existence since the Cold War, but have now been repurposed in the event of civil disorder following a no-deal Brexit."
The Brexit evacuation plan has been repurposed from a Cold War plan called "Operation Candid", which would evacuate the Queen on the royal yacht Britannia if there was an attack from the Soviet Union. However, the yacht is no longer in use.
Under the current plan, the Queen and Prince Phillip "would be moved out of London to a secret location" in the event that violent crowds appeared following a no-deal Brexit, according to the Sunday Times.
A senior Whitehall source told the publication, "It would be irresponsible if we didn’t consider every eventuality in the event of a no-deal Brexit — no matter how unlikely — and of course, that would include the security of the Royal family."
However, a government source added, "The decision to evacuate members of the Royal family is based on whether or not their safety is compromised. But right now we have no concern about their safety."
With Brexit now set to happen in less than two months on 31st January 2020, the Royals might have to start packing their toothbrushes.
