Section 4 swimming championships: Which teams, athletes stood out

The section's powerhouse girls swimming and diving programs returned to the top of the pack Saturday, with Horseheads, Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour and Maine-Endwell repeating as team champions at the Section 4 championship meets.

Horseheads was tops in Class A for the third season in a row.

Maine-Endwell earned a third straight sectional title in Class B.

Watkins Glen/O-M's Class C crown was a sixth straight, counting four won by Watkins Glen as a solo program.

What's Next

Qualifiers from the regular season and the sectional championships will compete at the New York State Girls Swimming & Diving Championships on Nov. 18 and 19 at the Webster Aquatic Center in the Rochester area.

Top performer

Corning senior Angie McKane, last year's 100-yard butterfly public schools state champion, repeated as Class A champion in the 50 freestyle and butterfly with times worthy of All-American consideration. McKane won the 50 in a meet and pool record 23.53 seconds and her butterfly time was 54.89. She is ranked first in New York state in both events.

She closed the meet by helping Corning win the 400 freestyle relay with a leadoff 100 of 51.98, a meet and pool record. Her time was the fourth-fastest in the state this season. Corning's relay qualified for states by virtue of being the fastest time among the three class meets. The Hawks' 200 relay also qualified for states this season.

McKane was named Most Outstanding Athlete for Class A.

Other notable performances

While many swimmers and divers had previously qualified for the state meet, there were several times and scores that achieved the state standard among the three class meets. Finals for classes A and C were held at Watkins Glen on Saturday, and Class C was at Maine-Endwell. All diving was Friday at M-E.

Along with McKane's trio of state qualifying times, others who hit the standard were Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour's Thalia Marquez (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Alannah Klemann (200 IM, 100 backstroke) and Faye Mooney (100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke); Corning's Brooke Terwilliger (diving); Horseheads' Anna Lowe (100 freestyle) and the team's 200 freestyle relay; Owego's Kaelyn Katchuk (diving); Waverly's Mira Kittle (backstroke) and Maine-Endwell's Madison Morris (diving).

Horseheads had the fastest 200 medley relay time among the meets to qualify for states.
