Live updates: New Circle Road reopened after serious collision

New Circle Road in Lexington has been reopened after it was completely shut down Monday morning due to a serious collision, according to the Lexington Traffic Management Center and Lexington police.

The accident happened on New Circle Road at Harrodsburg Road at approximately 8:30 a.m., according to Lt. Samantha Moore with the Lexington Police Department. A man was sent to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after flipping and being ejected from his vehicle.

The traffic management center reported that all inner and outer lanes shut down while officials investigated the scene. Moore said the collision reconstruction unit was requested to investigate the crash.

New Circle Road fully reopened

11:30 a.m. — New Circle Road has been completely reopened, according to the traffic management center.

There were four accidents in the Harrodsburg Road area of New Circle Road Monday morning, one of which sent a man to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Correction: Inner New Circle Road fully reopened, one lane open in outer New Circle Road

11:15 a.m. — The traffic management center issued a correction about a previous traffic report of New Circle Road after a serious collision Monday morning.

All inner lanes of New Circle Road are open while only one lane of outer New Circle Road is open due to a separate injury collision, according to the traffic management center. The traffic management center previously reported the outer lanes were fully reopened and the inner lanes were partially blocked.

New Circle Road mostly reopened, but traffic still backed up

10:50 a.m. — The traffic management center reported that officials have cleared the scene of Monday morning’s serious collision and New Circle Road has mostly been reopened.

According to the traffic management center, all outer lanes of New Circle Road are open but there is a stalled vehicle in the area that’s causing moderate traffic delays. Only one lane of inner New Circle Road is opened due to a separate injury-collision, bringing the total number of accidents in the area Monday morning to four.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s traffic map still shows heavy traffic on New Circle Road between Nicholasville Road and Versailles Road.

What happened?

10:30 a.m. — Moore said it was a single-vehicle collision where a male driver traveling in the outer lanes of New Circle Road hit a guard rail, flipped into the inner lanes of New Circle Road and was ejected from his vehicle.

The driver was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Moore.

The accident caused officials to block off all lanes of New Circle Road while the collision reconstruction unit investigated the crash.

There were two other collisions that happened in area at around the same time but they were unconnected to the single-vehicle accident, according to Moore.

New Circle Road shut down

9 a.m. — Drivers on New Circle Road are being diverted on to the exit ramps at Harrodsburg Road, according to the traffic management center.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the city traffic management center tweeted: “Motorists should avoid New Circle Rd between Versailles Rd and Nicholasville Rd IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.New Circle Rd is shutdown in BOTH DIRECTIONS at Harrodsburg Rd due to a serious collision, plus at least two other collisions.”

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s traffic map shows heavy traffic in the area of the wreck, primarily on the inner lanes heading towards Harrodsburg Road.
