Section V Baseball: Palmyra-Macedon moves into state final four round

Palmyra-Macedon's first trip into a high school baseball state tournament is an extended stay.

The Red Raiders defeated Medina of Section VI 11-1 in the Class B state tournament regional at Monroe Community College on June 4, moving undefeated Palmyra-Macedon into the semifinals.

Chris Finocchario pitched 5 innings, allowed 3 hits and walked 1 batter during the state quarterfinal round game. Finocchario also struck out six batters, and drove in three runs himself, as he finished 3 for 4 as a hitter.

Christian Morrison, who was 2 for 3 with a double, and Ian Goodness, who was 2 for 2 with a triple, also each drove in three runs for the Red Raiders (24-0).

Palmyra-Macedon faces either Section IX champion Spackenkill or Section XI champion Center Moriches, 5 p.m. June 10 at Maine-Endwell High, just outside of Binghamton. Center Moriches and Spackenkill are teams on Long Island.

The Red Raiders also were Section V champions in 2021 and 2013, but this is the first time the team has reached the state tournament. Wayland-Cohocton defeated the 2013 Palmyra-Macedon Red Raiders in a state tournament qualifier.

There were no state playoffs in 2021, because of concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic.

A comeback in the ninth inning by Fillmore fell short, ending the Section V champion's season at Salamanca High.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama scored a run in each of the first three innings and went on to defeat the Eagles 3-2 on June 4 in a Class D state tournament regional game.

Trent Burchanowski drove in two runs and Michah Willink one for the Section VI champions (17-1), who advanced to the state semifinals in the Binghamton region next weekend.

Gabe Roth held the Eagles in check while pitching a complete game, despite allowing both Fillmore runs, nine hits and two walks. Clymer/Sherman/Panama's starting pitcher also struck out seven batters.

Fillmore (16-4) scored twice in the top of the ninth. Alex Ellsworth and Luke Colombo each had two of Fillmore's nine hits. Brent Zubikowski, who was 1 for 4, drove in Fillmore's both runs.
