Section V wrestling's dual meet championships begin: Division II teams in contention

Section V wrestling will crown the area's best teams in head-to-head matchups during the next two weeks.

Two Section V champions, and possibly a wild card team or two, advance to the dual meet state tournament. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association's dual meet state championships are January 28 inside the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College.

First up in Section V is the Division II dual meet championships.

The tournament opened January 10, with the higher seeds hosting the first-round matches. Semifinalists advanced into the action January 11 at Palmyra-Macedon.

The first round matchups:

  • No. 1 seed Canisteo-Greenwood had a bye, will wrestle in the semifinals, which are 5 p.m. on two mats at Palmyra-Macedon Wednesday. The finals and third-place matches are 6:30 p.m.

  • No. 7 Avon/Geneseo at No. 2 Honeoye Falls-Lima

  • No. 6 North Rose-Wolcott at No. 3 Palmyra-Macedon

  • No. 5 Alexander at No. 4 Lyndonville

What about Division I?

The Section V Division I Dual Meet Championships begin January 17. The field for the large schools still needs to form.

There are six slots, all for teams in the Monroe County league. East High and McQuaid have turned down the invitations for the Rochester City Athletic Conference, according to Section V wrestling coordinator Bill Hadsell.

The top two finishers in three of the Monroe County league's four divisions advance to the Division I sectional duals. Brockport and Hilton, which have clinched division titles are in. So is Attica/Batavia.

The other qualifiers should be sorted out this week. Hilton has one of two byes, moving the Cadets into the semifinals before the final on January 21 at Fairport.
