Sectional droughts end for Harrison, Rossville, Twin Lakes, Tri-County

It had been nearly four decades since Harrison hoisted a sectional championship trophy in girls basketball.

Generations had come through and still the same season-ending result.

Great teams. Winless teams. All-time Raider greats all came and went without postseason success.

On Saturday night, a motivated crew led by senior Riley Flinn changed the narrative.

Behind Flinn's 16 points and seven rebounds, Harrison defeated Logansport 47-29 at Crawley Center to win the Class 4A, Sectional 7 championship.

Prior to Saturday, the program won just two sectional championships, coming in consecutive years in 1985 and '86.

Three times in the previous four years, the eventual sectional champion knocked the Raiders out of the postseason, including twice in the title game.

After beating Kokomo in Friday's semifinal thanks to Flinn's 20 points, the Raiders (16-9) would not be denied and now face Fort Wayne Snider (20-4) in Saturday's regional championship at Marion with a chance to do what those previous two sectional championship teams did, win the regional.

After a two-point advantage following the first quarter, the Raiders held Logansport to three second quarter points and never looked back.

Ava Ahnert scored 15 points, while Campbell Moore had five points and seven rebounds en route to a trophy celebration.

Class 3A at Benton Central

After surviving a double-overtime semifinal game against West Lafayette on Friday, Class 3A No. 1 Twin Lakes had to overcome Benton Central's prestigious girls basketball history and a determined team playing on its home floor.

After the Bison kept it close early, Twin Lakes pulled away at Arena Gymnasium for a 56-32 victory to improve to 26-0.

The Indians won their first sectional championship since 2007 and now try to win their first regional since 1982. Twin Lakes plays Garrett (14-11) in Saturday's regional championship at Bellmont.

Sophomore point guard Addie Bowsman helped deliver her father and coach, Brad Bowsman, his second sectional title with game-highs of 20 points and seven assists.

Class A at Attica

Rossville's second-half of the season surge continued with its first sectional championship in 33 years.

In a season that began with five straight losses and six in the first seven games, the Hornets made that ancient history with a 42-40 upset over Faith Christian in Saturday's Class A sectional championship.

Rossville (15-10) improved to 14-4 over its last 18 games and now has an opportunity to win the program's first regional title in Saturday's Class A championship game at Wes-Del against Tri-Central (11-13), which the Hornets defeated 34-29 on Jan. 13.

Tori Skiles sank five 3-pointers against the Eagles in the sectional final, scoring 15 points and Ava Burkle added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Addi Gorbet finished with a team-high 12 rebounds.

Class A at Tri-County

North White made a push for sixth sectional title in the last nine years after upsetting tournament favorite Caston in Friday's semifinal.

But Tri-County wanted to send fans home happy on its home court and dethroned last year's sectional winner after the Vikings were narrowly defeated in last season's Class A semistate.

The Cavaliers defeated North White 42-31 for the program's first sectional championship since 2010.

Tri-County (14-11) travels to Caston to play Bethany Christian (12-13) in Saturday's regional championship. Tri-County's only regional crown came in 1998.

Freshman Grace Luck led Tri-County with 13 points in the sectional championship win and Johnetta Whitmire had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sara Zarse added seven points and 11 rebounds.
