Security scare at Naval Air Station Key West causes base lockdown
A man drove through the front gate of Naval Air Station Key West on Thursday afternoon, creating a security scare and lockdown that lasted nearly two hours.
The driver went through the Trumbo Point gate at 3:30 p.m. and never stopped, according to base spokeswoman Danette Baso Silvers.
Navy security immediately locked down all the gates as they searched for the driver, Baso Silvers said.
Navy security and Key West Police Department officers eventually found the man, and the base was reopened at 4:55 p.m., Baso Silvers said.
“Our security forces reacted exactly the way they should have,” she said.
The man is in custody, but it was not immediately clear Thursday night whether he’s been arrested nor which agency is questioning him.
