Gael García Bernal looks fabuloso as Cassandro.

The first image from the upcoming feature film Cassandro, which tells the story of gay Mexican-American professional wrestler Saúl Armendáriz, was just released, letting us see what Bernal will look like in the titular role.

Armendáriz grew up in El Paso, Texas near the U.S.-Mexican border. When he was young, he became fascinated with luchador wrestling and had dreams of competing at the highest levels.

Once he entered the wrestling world, the gay Armendáriz came up with the flamboyant and effeminate persona Cassandro, the "Liberace of Lucha Libre," and he took the machismo-driven world of wrestling by surprise, becoming one of the most popular Mexican wrestlers and the first foreign-born wrestler to win a world title. Not only did he upend the wrestling world, but his life as well.

This isn’t Bernal’s first time playing gay.

One of his breakout roles was in 2001’s Y tu mamá también, where he played a young man on a road trip with his best friend and an older woman. That movie famously features a threesome between Bernal’s character and those played by Diego Luna and Maribel Verdú.

Then, in 2004’s Bad Education, he played a trans character named Ángel Andrade. Now, he returns to the type of role that initially made him famous.

Cassandro is written and directed by Roger Ross Williams, a documentary filmmaker known for the movies Life, Animated and God Loves Uganda. He’s been nominated for two Oscars, one for Life, Animated, and the other, which he won, for his documentary short Music by Prudence.

In addition to García Bernal, the movie also stars A League of Their Own’s Roberta Colindrez, Looking’s Raúl Castillo, Perla De La Rosa, and Joaquín Cosío.

Cassandro is set to debut on Prime Video in 2023.
