Each decade following the U.S. Census, California redraws its voting districts to reflect population changes.

After months of input, the California Citizens Redistricting Commission released drafts of what California's senate and assembly districts — as well as U.S. Congressional districts — could look like for the next 10 years.

Here's how the proposed boundaries compare to what San Joaquin County residents asked for.

U.S. House of Representatives

In October, more than 7,500 San Joaquin County residents responded to a survey on how they believe districts drawn in and around the county should look.

A majority of those surveyed said they wanted San Joaquin County to be one U.S. Congressional district. The county is currently split into two districts. U.S. Rep. Jerry McNerney represents District 9 and U.S. Rep. Josh Harder represents District 10.

The proposed map would keep most of San Joaquin County in a single district. It would encompass county centers including Stockton and Lodi as well as Tracy and Manteca, which currently fall in separate districts.

A small strip of the county south of Escalon and east of Ripon would be excluded from the new district. A triangular piece of Stanislaus County, with Woodward Reservoir roughly at its center, would be included.

California Senate

Survey respondents overwhelmingly asked not to alter the district that represents San Joaquin County in the state senate. District 5 includes the entire county and small portions of Stanislaus and Sacramento counties, and is represented by Sen. Susan Talamantes Eggman.

The proposed map would expand the district to the north to include Rancho Murieta and Wilton, and to the south to include Patterson, Diablo Grande, Crows Landing and Newman.

California Assembly

A majority of respondents said San Joaquin County should be represented by two California Assembly districts. The county is split roughly north-to-south, with Stockton and Tracy in District 13 and Manteca, Ripon and Escalon in District 12.

Assembly Member Carlos Villapudua represents District 13, and Heath Flora represents District 12.

Lodi falls in District 9, which includes much of Sacramento County, and is represented by Jim Cooper.

The proposed map would elongate the eastern district to include Lodi, and Hood in the north. That district would also encompass towns further west including Isleton and Walnut Grove.

Comments about the proposed maps can be sent to the redistricting commission here. The commission plans to review public input Dec. 1-4 and Dec. 6. The commission must certify final maps by Dec. 27.
