Chara Schreyer, one of the world’s leading art collectors, bought and designed homes to showcase her priceless works.

Her five amazing residences hold a staggering collection of nearly 650 works of art created by superstar artists, such as Marcel Duchamp, Mark Bradford, Georgia O’Keeffe and Andy Warhol.

One of her homes, a fabulous Marin County estate overlooking San Francisco Bay, has just hit the market for $8.28 million.

Called the “Art House,” it’s a six-bedroom, six-bathroom house spanning 8,170 square feet on nearly an acre in Tiburon, California. The residence at 83 Mount Tiburon Road overlooks the Tiburon Peninsula, Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito.

Schreyer, a longtime resident of Tiburon, died in February at 75. Schreyer often gave public home tours of her collection.

For more than 40 years, she teamed up with interior designer Gary Hutton to create homes to honor her art collection. The Marin Art House is no different.

In a nod to the lighter side of art, Schreyer placed an enormous half of a pair of eye glasses outside at the Art House, while the other half of the pair can be found outside of one of her homes in Los Angeles.

The gleaming, gallery-like Tiburon house, with high ceilings and a dramatic spiral staircase in the grand entryway, wonderfully blends art and architecture. Large windows and skylights bathe the interior in natural light.

“When I first walked into the home I was overwhelmed by the unique architecture, space, views, and grounds,” Compass listing agent Shana Rohde-Lynch said in an email to The Sacramento Bee. “Every space is enhanced by a piece of art from the legendary art collector Chara Schreyer. The outdoor living spaces tie in the natural landscape with meandering walkways, an expansive entertainment terrace with multiple seating areas, and a sunny pool site.”

The residence features a wood-paneled library, office, media/recreation room and gym. The primary suite on the upper level offers a marble fireplace, private balcony and sweeping views of San Francisco Bay. The bathroom is a work of art, itself, with a custom steel, rotating shower door.

Outside, the natural landscape is punctuated with meandering walkways, outdoors art, an expansive entertainment terrace with multiple seating areas, a commercial-grade, stainless steel built-in grilling station and a pool.
