With October on the horizon, many Oklahomans may be looking for a way to spend fall break.

The time off differs between school districts — Oklahoma City Public Schools students will be out of school for an entire week, while some schools get a few days off — but generally falls around mid-October. With the crisp air, changing leaves and no school, it's the perfect time to take a road trip around the Sooner State.

From the far southeast vacation destination of Broken Bow, to getting your kicks on the Mother Road, to visiting your favorite Oklahoma musicians hometown, there's plenty to do this fall break in Oklahoma.

What to do in Broken Bow for fall break

Want to see what all the fuss is about?

Head to southeast Oklahoma to visit Broken Bow and the nearby Hochatown and Beavers Bend State Park. The area has become a tourist sensation, especially for Texans flocking to Oklahoma for weekend getaways.

There's everything to do from fishing, kayaking, horseback riding or just staying put at your cozy cabin retreat.

Nestled in south-central Oklahoma are the ancient Arbuckle Mountains, creating an outdoor lovers oasis with waterfalls, lakes and hiking.

Explore Route 66 in Oklahoma

For a stretch of nearly 400 miles across Oklahoma are roadside attractions, museums and restaurants on what was previously Route 66.

Known as the "Mother Road" or the "Main Street of America," Oklahoma families are sure to find plenty to do along the historic highway.

Oklahoma Country Music fan road trip

Oklahoma has no shortage of country musicians who got their start in the state.

While many who find stardom spend much of their time outside of Oklahoma, several have opened attractions in or near their hometowns.

Three in particular grew up in central and south-central Oklahoma: Toby Keith, Blake Shelton and Reba McEntire. Here are some road trip stops for fans of these three and country music in general.

Visit this cluster of state parks in Northwest Oklahoma

Oklahoma has 38 state parks, each full of different adventures.

There are a few clusters of parks near one another throughout the state, including several found in northwest Oklahoma.

From Oklahoma City, head north to the Salt Plains Wildlife Refuge and State Park where you can dig for selenite crystals until Oct. 15. From there, go west to find Alabaster Caverns, Boiling Springs, Little Sahara and Gloss Mountain not far from each other. On your way back to OKC, you'll find Roman Nose State Park.
