See Which Halloween Costume Is Most Popular In North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA— It might be a long shot to make Halloween in 2020 to become scarier than the year itself, but that’s not stopping enthusiasts of the spooky holiday from lining up their costumes for the annual Oct. 31 celebration.

As parties, celebrations and traditions take on a different form due to the coronavirus pandemic, so do current costume trends.

The trending Halloween costumes list by Google shows the most-searched-for Halloween costume in every state, and some results may come as a surprise in an analysis of the data by All Home Connections, an AT&T affiliate.

In North Carolina, the most popular costume this Halloween season is Pennywise.

Spider-Man is the hottest one in the most states, notching the top spot in eight, according to a map from AT&T. Harley Quinn appears to be the next trendiest Halloween attire, as seven states searched for Joker’s sidekick in the Batman series more than any other.

Logical connections to why any state has a particular costume as its top trend aren’t clear, with a seemingly random array of costumes sprinkled across the map.

Regionally, Spider-Man remains strong in the South, notching top popularity in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee. Harley Quinn is most popular in the Midwest, holding the top spots in Illinois, Indiana and Nebraska.

Pirates, clowns, angels and princesses also took a handful of states. None of those involve a natural face covering design, AT&T noted in its analysis.

Angels, usually popular, only topped the list in two states. Could that be due to 2020’s bleak outlook, as AT&T suggests? If so, Nevada and Ohio may have a more optimistic approach to the year’s end.

Every costume on the list came in as the most popular in multiple states except for the superhero get-up. That’s the most popular one only in Vermont.
