First Friday Gallery Walk

There are two excellent exhibits currently on display which will be presented at the First Friday Gallery Walk.

The Members’ Show, which will run until October 17, consists of seven rooms of paintings and pottery created by over 100 artists of the Associated Artists of Southport. Works are done in a wide variety of styles, mediums, and sizes including a mini gallery, featuring paintings smaller than 9x12. Prints, cards, and gift items also are available.

The second exhibition features beautiful quilts by members of the Oak Island Beach Quilters, who regularly donate quilts to charity. The overall theme for the Quilt Show is “birds” which appear in some form in each quilt. The 18 quilts in the show (runs until Sept. 17) were juried by a team of quilters who chose the items to exhibit and awarded first, second, third, and fourth place ribbons and several honorable mention awards. There are also displays of charity quilts, donated to various charities such as Habitat for Humanity, and Honors Quilts that are given to veterans and public service employees.

The gallery walk  also include refreshments and live music. It will also feature live demos by several Associated Artists of Southport artists. Cheryl Lee will build clay pots with dowels showing a simple and fun way to making a vase or pot. Johnny Robertson will demonstrate a pouring technique in watercolor, showing its transparency and luminous properties, and complete his painting with brushwork. Robert Salemme will demonstrate traditional acrylic painting with brushwork, and Diane Sloan will create a portrait in watercolor.

The walk will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 at  Franklin Square Gallery, 130 E. West St., Southport.
