The Junior Orange Bowl Parade, 75 years old this year, celebrated with a parade, of course.
The annual parade ran along Miracle Mile in Coral Gables on Sunday, Dec. 10.
Crowds lining the route saw marching bands, floats, cheerleaders and horses. Participants were from Coral Gables’ fire and police departments and armed forces unit, Arthur & Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts, University of Miami’s Sebastian the Ibis, North Dade Center for Modern Languages Elementary, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Miami Senior High School, South Florida Trail Riders and Miami Northwestern Senior High School Marching Band. More than 50 units made up the parade.
Reasons to celebrate
Also noteworthy this year: Super Wheels Skating Center handed off to its successor, Miami Roller Rink, on back-to-back entries along the route. Super Wheels floated a giant Skate Car and Santa in a suit and skates with Grinch lime-colored leggings. Miami Roller Rink followed with a van, its rear doors open to expose a neon-lit VIP lounge. Holiday tunes? Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” naturally.
Super Wheels, a Kendall skating landmark since it opened as Hot Wheels in 1987, threw its End of an Era party for hundreds in November, and will have its last session on Dec. 31. Miami Roller Rink will take over operations on Jan. 1.
The route also rolled adjacent to the Miracle Theatre’s marquee emblazoned with lettering noting its shared 75th anniversary this year. Members of the Actors’ Playhouse Musical Miracles from the theater marched the route.
On Saturday afternoon before the parade, the Miracle Theatre held an open house to celebrate its 75th and began collecting items for a centenary time capsule to be placed at the venue and opened on its 100th anniversary in 25 years.
