With a hotly contested primary for lieutenant governor coming even before contested general races like those for governor, many Mississippi's are showing their support by opening their wallets.

In their January-April campaign finance reports, released earlier this month, both incumbent Republican Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and his challenger state Sen. Chris McDaniel reported raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in just the first few months of the year.

McDaniel's campaign finance filling for January-April included donations from May, donations that were previously reported in a different filing and a donation from his former Political Action Committee, much of which he returned, according to previous Clarion Ledger reporting. The figures and analysis provided here are based on his filing as it appears on the Secretary of State website.

From the 539 contributions listed in its filing, the McDaniel campaign reporting raising $677,775.77 during the period. Those totals would mean McDaniel is averaging $1,257.47 per contribution. But if you remove the May contributions and donations McDaniel returned, he raised around $203,000 from January to April.

Hosemann, meanwhile, reported raising $192,836.41 from 62 contributions, which gives him an average of $3,110.26 per contribution. Hosemann did not hold fundraising events during the legislative session, which coincided with the reporting period.

Some notable people gave to each campaign, and both candidates gave to themselves. McDaniel donated $43,400 of his own money to his campaign, while Hosemann donated $3,750.

McDaniel received a $25 donation from Shane Quick, who is also a candidate that filed to challenge Hosemann in the Republican primary. Quick reported raising $0 in his filing. McDaniel's campaign also got a $1,000 contribution from Scott Brewster. Brewster, a former high-ranking official in McDaniel's 2014 campaign for U.S. Senate, was one of three men found locked inside the Hinds County Courthouse in the early morning after vote counting had finished in that primary. The Hinds County Sheriff's Office later announced it had found no evidence of criminal activity.

Hosemann received a $5,000 donation from former Republican Gov. Haley Barbour and his wife. Barbour is a co-founder and partner at international lobbying firm BGR Group. Including Barbour, BGR employees gave Hosemann a total of $8,500.

It is difficult to compare McDaniel and Hosemann in terms of which industries provided them with the most support. Of McDaniel's 539 listed contributions, 111 say "Information Requested" under the occupation or employer tab.

Hosemann's filing, which lists an occupation or employer for each contributor, received significant support from realtors, car dealers and physicians.

Hosemann's largest individual donor was Barry Wax of Amory, who gave $25,000. Wax works at Wax Seed Co. McDaniel's largest individual donor was Billy McDaniel of Banner Elk, NC. Billy McDaniel's occupation is listed as information requested.

Hosemann's filing included some noticeable geographic patterns. Of the 62 listed contributions, 35 come from Vicksburg addresses.

Hosemann maintains a lead in cash on hand as of the end of April, with about $3.34 million compared to McDaniel's reported total of roughly $336,000. Incumbents often come into races with leads in cash on hand compared to their challengers.
