See who made the grade for Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame

The Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday revealed its induction Class of 2023.

Inductees will be recognized at an April 24 banquet at the Double Tree by Hilton in Binghamton.

Guest speaker for the event has yet to be disclosed.

Honor roll of inductees:

TOM CORGEL

Administrator, coach, teacher … Coached Binghamton High School boys basketball teams to back-to-back NY State Class A Championships in 1985 and 1986 … Overall coaching record of 213-62 with six STAC championships, and five Section 4 championships (1975-1989) … High School Coach of the Year by the NYS Basketball Coaches Association in 1986; Press & Sun-Bulletin Coach of the Year (2 times) … Elected to the following Halls of Fame: Seton Catholic Central, NYSPHSAA Section 4 and the NYS Coaches Association … Awarded three Bronze Stars for duty in Vietnam (Combat Air Medal).

Baseball coach at Binghamton North High School, Johnson City and Union-Endicott with overall record of 275-93 …

Won baseball championships: STAC (three times), Section 4 (8 times), New York State (twice) … As a player: at Union-Endicott High School was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, and baseball); at Springfield College was a pitcher with an 11-1 record … Currently serving as assistant baseball coach at Binghamton University … Section 4 inductee.

SANDY STONE SESTAK FORBES

Competitive Golfer for 68 years … Won numerous club championships including (En-Joie, Binghamton Country Club, Chenango Valley State Park, Vestal Hills Country Club … Broke Babe Didrickson Zaharia's 1948 course record at En-Joie with a score of 74 in 1956 and set the Women's course record from the men's tees with a 72 in 1970 … Won multiple Broome County Golf Championships … First female athletic director in Broome County, at Chenango Valley HS.

BOBBY GONZALEZ

Basketball coach with experience of over 30 years spanning high school, college, NBA, and international … Head basketball coach at Seton Hall University (45-22, .672), and at Manhattan College (68-16, .810) … Won eight season conference and tournament championships as NCAA head coach, and made five postseason appearances in 11 years … Recruited and coached 12 players that later played in the NBA … Coached professionally in Asia and Europe, and spoke at basketball clinics in over 19 countries.

MAGGIE GRAY

Award-winning sports broadcaster and co-host of the nationally syndicated "The Maggie and Perloff Show" on CBS Sports Radio Network … Previously daytime host on WFAN … Lead anchor for eight years at Sports Illustrated S.I.com's digital video content and host of the live show, "S.I. Now" … 2021 Gracie Award Winner for outstanding achievement in broadcasting, presented by the alliance of Women in Sports Media … Has covered Super Bowls, NCAA Final Fours, College Football National Championships, the NBA and NHL Finals, the World Series, the NBA and NFL Drafts, NASCAR and Indy Races, Women's College Basketball and Volleyball.

LOU HOWELL

Baseball player (catcher) and coach … Drafted by the NY Yankees in the fifth round of the 1965 MLB Draft … Played for the Binghamton Triplets (1965-1968) … Played for the Syracuse Chiefs (1969), who won the Governor's Cup Championship … Played at Kentucky Wesleyan College: batted .441 in junior year, played in 74 straight games, named to NCAA College Division Mid-East All Regional Team … 32-year career at Susquehanna Valley HS including as baseball coach, athletic director and teacher; coached baseball team to Section 4 finals (1981) and to STAC Champions (three times).

FRANK A. LOVUOLO (Posthumously)

NFL player and Football coach at Binghamton Central High School and at Catholic Central High School … Drafted by the New York Giants in the seventh round in 1949 … As defensive end for the NY Giants, Steve Owen, their head coach called LoVuolo, "one of the best all-around ends in the league last year (1949)." … At St. Bonaventure University: in 1947-'48 led football team in scoring; Little All-American, Extension Magazine All-American, Eddie Dooley All-American, United Press All-American (Honorable Mention), Associated Press All East, INS All East … Inducted into inaugural St. Bonaventure University Hall of Fame Class of 1969.

BRIDGET (BAXTER) ORCHARD

Collegiate softball coach with an overall record of 865-495 (.634) at Villanova University, Fordham University, and Cabrini College

(25 seasons) … As head coach at Villanova, earned program's first Big East Title and the first NCAA Tournament victory in the program's 45 years as a varsity sport with a 37-15 record in 2021 … As head coach at Fordham, led the Rams to eight NCAA Regionals and earned seven Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year Awards … As a player (second baseman), her Villanova teams were 120-91 … At Villanova, Orchard set the Wildcats’ career records of 216 hits and 110 runs scored, and earned All-Big East honors in 1995 … Was a .334 career hitter, stole 35 bases, and played in 205 consecutive games.

WILLIAM "BILL" RICH

Women's soccer coach at SUNY-Broome Community College with an overall record of 353-88-15 (25 years) … SUNY-BCC teams won National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championships in 2007, 2008, and in 2016; regional championships (five times); conference championships (16 times) … Holds record for most career wins by an NJCAA D-III Soccer Coach … Produced 34 NJCAA soccer All-Americans … Won NJCAA National Coach of the Year.

BILL STEPANOVSKY

Soccer coach and official … Coached girls varsity soccer at Union-Endicott and at with an overall record of 294-37-27 with 256 shutouts in 358 games, averaging 13.5 shutouts a year … As Union-Endicott girls coach from 1999-2009, and with a record of 177-18-19, his teams won nine Section 4 championships and seven STAC Championships, with national rankings seven out of 11 years … Officiated for over 45 years for basketball and soccer, and over 20 years for girl's lacrosse … Inducted into the NY State Girl's Soccer Hall of Fame (2020), and the Union-Endicott HS Athletics Hall of Fame (2023).

LURA A. WILSON (Posthumously)

Archer, coach, and teacher … As an archer, shot from 1926-1990, NY State Women's Champion (five times), National Clout Champion (right and left handed, four times) … As an instructor: The World Archery Center (1939-1992), National Coaching Shooting School at Miami University, Greene Central High School … As a Coach: Awarded Level 5 Master Coach; at Greene Central School had 17 National Interscholastic Team Champions, 28 NY State Individual and Team Champions; U.S. National Archery Teams in Japan in 1978, and in 1983 … Officiated numerous national and international tournaments … Inducted into National Archery Hall of Fame (1979), and into the New York State Hall of Fame.
