Newly released video shows the moment a Bayshore mall parking garage partially collapsed after plow crews stacked more than 100 tons of heavy snow in one area on the roof of the garage causing the roof to collapse to the ground below.
The incident unfolded Thursday around noon, causing a large response of fire and medical personnel after not initially knowing if anyone was hurt in the incident.
Fire officials have said they are "very confident" no one is under the rubble after reviewing large amounts of surveillance footage at the mall. However, two Whitefish Bay High School students were about to drive directly into the garage. And, in the video, an SUV is seen entering the garage shortly before it collapses.
At least two cars were damaged and 56 cars are trapped inside the structure because the collapse happened over the sole ramp. Collapses caused by snow happens throughout the United States, when snowplow drivers concentrate all the snow in one spot.
West Allis-based Winter Services LLC took over plow services for Bayshore mall in 2021. Winter Services declined to speak to the Journal Sentinel on Friday.
The Milwaukee area experienced a unique snowfall recently, that resulted in a "total liquid equivalent" between 0.9 and 1.2 inches from the storm, the National Weather Service said. One liquid equivalent inch typically equates to 10 inches of snow, according to the weather service.
