See how much rain North Jersey got yesterday. There's more on the way

North Jersey was drenched by rain Monday, with some towns getting several inches. And with more rain in the forecast Tuesday, the inconvenience may continue.

The heavy rain led to numerous flight delays and cancellations and prompted concern from Gov. Phil Murphy, who urged caution in a Tweet.

Here's how much rain has fallen over the area as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to Bob Ziff of the North Jersey Weather Observers:

  • Paterson: 4.03 inches

Though more rain is in the forecast for Tuesday, it likely won't rise to the level of Monday's scattered storms.

There is a chance of showers throughout the day with the possibility of thunderstorms beginning in the afternoon. Morris County is under a flood warning until early Wednesday, while Sussex and Warren counties are both under flood watches.

What's the difference between a Flash Flood Watch and a Flash Flood Warning?

The National Weather Service offers the following explanation between warnings, watches and advisory:

  • Flash Flood Warning: A warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. Those in flood prone areas should move immediately to high ground. Flash floods are sudden and violent and can take from minutes to hours to develop.

  • Flood Warning: A flood warning is issued when the flood is imminent or already happening.

  • Flood Advisory: Flood advisories are issued when a specific event is forecast to occur that may become a nuisance. Advisories are issued when flooding is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning.

  • Flood Watch: Be prepared: A watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a flood to occur. It doesn't mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Tornado in New Jersey

While North Jersey has seen its fair share of treacherous weather this week, residents in Bernardsville had to deal with a tornado.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the area had a tornado during a storm survey of the severe thunderstorms in the area.

The Bernardsville Police Department wrote in a Facebook post: "JCP&L Crews and Bernardsville Public Work Crews continue to work to restore power and clear debris. ... Please stay safe and stay away from down wires."
