See Nextdoor founder’s historic Pacific Heights mansion – just hit market at $25 million

This might be a tasty tidbit for neighbors in Pacific Heights to post on Nextdoor.

Nirav Tolia, founder and former CEO of that super-local social networking service, just listed his historic San Francisco home for $25 million.

Built in Italian Renaissance style, the six-bedroom, seven-bath home at 2775 Vallejo Street presents a magnificent facade, nearly 49-feet wide with large windows. The estate is “a model of restrained Beaux-Arts classic elegance with symmetry, perfect proportions, and columned entry,” the property fact sheet states.

Originally designed by George Applegarth in 1916, the property was “reimagined” with the help of Ken Fulk and John Maniscalco, according to real estate firm Compass.

A renowned San Francisco architect, Applegarth’s work includes the Palace of the Legion of Honor and the Spreckels mansion.

Tolia, who launched Nextdoor in 2011, took on a vast renovation of the home after buying it, but the mansion’s historic features are what first caught his eye.

“My first memory of the house is standing outside and being transfixed by the stunning Italian coffered ceiling,” he told the Wall Street Journal in an email. “The house certainly needed work, but the bones were clearly excellent.”

The ceiling in the living room is the original, and an elevator grants access to all levels of the house. There are two independent garages with interior access and electric chargers.

The home’s bedroom level features four guest/family suites, all with en-suite bathrooms, custom black-out drapery and picturesque views of either the Golden Gate Bridge or the landscaped south garden. The bedrooms center around a family foyer.

The upstairs master retreat spans the entire top floor and is surrounded by terraces with full views of the Golden Gate Bridge through floor-to-ceiling windows, “a contemporary juxtaposition to the iconic Applegarth architecture,” according to the Compass fact sheet.

“It’s the best master suite I’ve ever seen anywhere and I’ve sold a lot of properties in San Francisco over 45 years,” listing agent Malin Giddings of Compass told SFGate.

Tolia bought the Pacific Heights house in 2011 as a wedding present for his wife, Megha Tolia, WSJ reported. The couple plan to temporarily relocate to Florence, Italy, but will eventually return to a place somewhere outside the city limits of San Francisco, the newspaper also reported.
