See the nominees and vote for News-Leader's first student of the week

It's time for the News-Leader's first Student of the Week, a new initiative to highlight the academic achievements of local area high school students. Each week you will have the opportunity to vote for a student of the week.

Nominations for students who have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and community service were received from administrators at participating districts in the Ozarks.

Voting is open until noon Thursday, Jan. 25. A person can cast a vote once per hour. The winner will be announced on Friday.

To cast a vote, head to the poll at the bottom of the nominee list.

The nominees for Jan. 22 are ...

Ryker Venosdel, Strafford High School: Described as an incredible young man who is always willing to help, Ryker looks for ways to brighten everyone's day and constantly has a smile on his face. He works hard in the classroom and pushes himself and his peers to be the best they can be. The senior is an amazing leader and is the epitome of what it means to be Strafford Strong.

Rylee Essick, Spokane High School: As a four-year member of not only Spokane Cheer but also Volleyball, FCCLA and Student Council, Rylee is described as super-involved in all things Spokane. Her leadership attributes are stellar as a student representative on the Board of Education, captain of the cheer team, Student Council president and senior class representative. Rylee is the textbook example of what student leaders should strive to be in efforts to get the most out of their high school experience.
