With her latest work, Danielle Brooks is proving to be an “everywoman.”

The award-winning actress, who gained notoriety as a prisoner in Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” and went on to garner a Tony Award nomination for portraying Sofia in Broadway’s “The Color Purple,” is now playing the late Queen of Gospel music, Mahalia Jackson.

The first trailer of Brooks starring as in the lead role of the upcoming Lifetime film, “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia,” has been released.

Arriving Feb. 3 on the basic cable channel, the Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon-directed film will follow Jackson’s entire life including her journey to become one of gospel music’s most revered figures.

With her signature song, the multiple million-selling “Move on Up a Little Higher,” Jackson was the first gospel singer to perform at Carnegie Hall. Aretha Franklin, Della Reese, Albertina Walker and countless others have cited the influence of Jackson, who also appeared in the 1959 remake of “Imitation of Life,” and “Sesame Street” in 1970.

Known as the “Queen of Gospel,” the New Orleans native also sang at John F. Kennedy’s inaugural ball in 1961 and was an active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, where she sang at numerous rallies, including the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic March on Washington in 1963.
