Because nothing is good enough in today's ever-crazier performance-car climate, the limited-edition 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro turns the wick up on the standard GT R to be a more focused track-day beast.

The GT R Pro headlines AMG's revised 2020 GT coupe lineup , which all receive meaningful updates to their interiors, as well as other minor upgrades.

With Mercedes-AMG factory driver Maro Engel behind the wheel, the GT R Pro lapped the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife some six seconds quicker than the non-Pro GT R.

Powering the GT R Pro is the same engine found in the regular GT R: AMG's hand-built, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 producing 577 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque.

Also shared with the GT R is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transaxle, which, along with the V-8, should get the Pro to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.

Aerodynamic upgrades let the Pro produce an additional 220 pounds of downforce at 155 mph than the GT R.

The Pro's weight savings are minimal – roughly 20 pounds over a similarly equipped GT R – but every bit counts on the track.

Available dark mate gray or bright lime green stripes help distinguish the GT R Pro.

As you'd expect from a big-power AMG V-8, the deep roar that the GT R Pro's active exhaust emits is intoxicating.

Beware of curbs: the GT R Pro is not available with a hydraulic nose-lifting system.

The Pro rolls on the same tires as the GT R, although it does sport lighter forged aluminum wheels, as well as standard carbon-ceramic brakes, which are optional on the standard GT R.

Along with new headlights that better match the new AMG GT 4-Door's, which all 2020 GT coupes receive, the GT R Pro's deeper front splitter with aluminum supports is its most prominent design feature.

The Pro also benefits from additional aero canards on the sides of its revised front fascia.

The GT R Pro also sports a restyled rear diffuser, as well as additional carbon-fiber side blades behind its rear wheels.

Smoked taillight lenses are new for all 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT models.

The Pro gains a small gurney lip on its standard adjustable rear wing, which helps to stabilize its tail at speed with additional downforce.

The addition of Mercedes-Benz's contemporary steering wheel to all 2020 AMG GT coupes is one of the highlights of the Pro's interior.

The GT R Pro's optional lightweight one-piece Recaro sport seats are highly supportive and surprisingly comfortable, although they won't be available on U.S. models.

A brilliant 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is new for 2020 and can provide a breadth of vehicle data when tracking the GT R Pro

A digital touchpad with additional selector buttons on the GT's steering wheel allows for adjusting the car's performance settings without looking away from the road.

Similarly, the 2020 GT's drive-mode selector dial has also migrated to the steering wheel.

Along with a restyled center console with cleaner ergonomics, the 2020 AMG GT coupe range also receives a larger 10.3-inch center display screen.

As with the lightweight seats, the GT R Pro's optional Track package – a rear rollover bar, four-point harnesses, and a fire extinguisher – will not be available in the U.S.

Despite the underhood placement of its plastic cover, the GT's powerplant is actually positioned far back in the chassis near the base of the windshield.

Additional aero enhancements on the GT R Pro include fender louvers that vent air from the front wheel wells.

Pricing has yet to be released for the GT R Pro, but expect its entry fee to be well in excess of $200K.

Of the 750 examples that will be built, only 150 GT R Pros will make it to the U.S., starting in late 2019.
