See or smell smoke around Essex County? Newark firefighters are battling a scrapyard fire

Newark firefighters have been battling a scrapyard fire on Calcutta Street that has been ablaze since last night, a spokesperson for Public Safety Director Brian O'Hara said.

The smell of smoke has spanned miles. New York City's Emergency Management notification system alerted Manhattan and Bronx residents about the potential smell of smoke. The Bronx is more than 20 miles away from the scrapyard.

The fire came from a pile of scrap metal at EMR Recycling, the spokesperson said. It started at 7:50 p.m. on Monday and has continued to burn through Tuesday morning. As of 8:40 a.m. the scene was still active, with 40 firefighters still there.

"The Fire Division is working with the scrap yard’s heavy equipment operators to move and spread out the metal so that it can be extinguished," the spokesperson said in an email.

The fire department is using the Essex County Neptune System, which can pull water from a river and pump up to 10,000 gallons per minute, the spokesperson said.

No injuries have been reported.
