Lee County is under a tropical storm watch as a rapidly intensifying Hurricane Idalia barrels toward Florida's west coast, with a storm surge of 2 to 4 feet possible in coastal areas, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Idalia is forecast to become a Category 3 hurricane before making landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida on Wednesday.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Idalia and urged residents to be prepared.
