See Upper West Side COVID-19 Rate Amid Omicron Surge

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Coronavirus is surging in New York City. There were 15,245 new cases reported in the city on Monday, and new information from the CDC shows that Omicron is now making up 92 percent of sequenced cases in New York and New Jersey.

That number is up from 13 percent last week.

Where does the Upper West Side positivity rate sit amid this jump in cases?

For the week of Dec. 12-18, which is the most up-to-date period the city has available information, the average COVID-19 positivity rate on the Upper West Side was 6.74 percent.

In total, 1,555 people living in the 10023, 10023, and 10025 ZIP codes tested positive during the seven-day window.

Here's more of a breakdown on the Upper West Side COVID numbers:

10025: Upper West Side/Manhattan Valley

  • 7-day percent positive: 6.97 percent

  • New people positive: 656

  • Median daily test rate: 1,827

10024: Upper West Side

  • 7-day percent positive: 6.28 percent

  • New people positive: 384

  • Median daily test rate: 2,060

10023: Lincoln Square

  • 7-day percent positive: 6.97 percent

  • New people positive: 515

  • Median daily test rate: 1,991

To give a bit more perspective on the Upper West Side's 6.74 percent COVID positivity rate, the NYC ZIP code with the lowest is in Borough Park, Brooklyn, where the rate is 4.09 percent. On the other end of the spectrum, the West Village's 10014 ZIP code has the highest positivity rate during the Dec. 12-18 window at 15.09 percent.

The 10023, 10024, and 10025 ZIP codes are all within the 20 lowest COVID rates in the five boroughs.

While the Upper West Side is on the lower end of the current surge, it is still a big jump from the neighborhood's rate earlier this fall.

In the second week of September, the 10024 ZIP code had the lowest positivity rate in the city at 1.06 percent. The 10025 and 10023 ZIP codes weren't much higher at the time, both registering a 1.44 percent positivity rate.
