Selena Gomez revealed in a new interview that her first time voting was in the 2020 election

The singer, actor, and beauty mogul opened up about this during her Voting Power Hour appearance in late October. “Honestly, I’m not ashamed to say this, but I kind of—this was my first time. And I’m going to say that because I never felt—and this is so true—and I’m now like admitting it to people, like my vote counts,” she said. “Like, every little thing counts, so I just think some people get in their head, like, Oh well, what does it matter? And then once I really, really started going in and diving in to this, it’s been all I can focus on.”

Watch Gomez talk about this for yourself in the video, below. Start around the 48-minute mark.

Gomez's feelings here aren't uncommon. Many of us have no doubt thought, Why does my one voice matter when there are so many? But the problem is, if everyone thinks that, no one does anything—we're all just waiting for the person next to us to take action. Gomez opening up about this will hopefully make people who didn't vote in past elections for similar reasons feel less embarrassed—and embolden them to get to the polls this year.

Gomez is a cochair of Michelle Obama's When We All Vote initiative and also narrated an episode of Netflix's Whose Vote Counts Explained series, which covered several topics related to voting, like voter suppression and the flawed Electoral College. On Saturday, October 24, she and Timothée Chalamet hopped on Instagram Live to get out the vote.

“I really hope this guy loses,” Chalamet said about President Donald Trump, to which Gomez laughed and replied, “I know!”

Mark your calendars, people: Election Day is November 3. It's almost here!
