Selena Gomez’s latest accessory brings new meaning to the phrase “statement necklace.” In a photo posted to Instagram by stylist Kate Young, Selena can be seen wearing a delicate gold necklace featuring the year “1973.” What happened in 1973 that Selena would want to wear it around her neck? It’s the year of the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, which solidified a person’s right to get an abortion in the United States if they so choose.
The necklace was designed by Sophie Ratner Jewelry and is a collaboration with Physicians for Reproductive Health. According to Sophie Ratner’s website, the necklace was designed in 2018 to “commemorate the 45th anniversary of the historic 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Decision.” The jewelry line donates 30% of sales from the necklaces, which come in gold, silver, and diamond, as well as bracelets, to Physicians for Reproductive Health, which works to improve access to reproductive healthcare like contraception and abortion to everyone, especially those who are economically disadvantaged. And standing up for reproductive rights and bodily autonomy is more important than ever; recent abortion restrictions are taking place across the United States and the future of Roe v. Wade could be challenged.
This isn’t the first time that Selena has demonstrated her support for the importance of reproductive healthcare. In May, she posted about the abortion restrictions on Instagram. “To see what is happening right now in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and several other states in our country is not only deeply upsetting but seems that it can’t possibly be real in 2019,” she wrote. “It’s no one’s business what a woman chooses to do with her body.” In addition to sharing her thoughts, Sel encouraged her followers to volunteer or donate to the cause.
