Semi driver dies in Wednesday morning crash east of Bowdle

One man died Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle crash east of Bowdle.

Names of the two people involved have not yet been released pending notification of family members, according to a news release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The crash was on U.S. Highway 12 four miles east of Bowdle at 11:32 a.m.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 59-year-old man was driving a 1995 International 9400 straight truck. He was northbound on 330th Avenue and failed to stop at the stop sign at the U.S. Highway 12 crossing.

the straight truck was struck by a Peterbilt semi-truck and trailer that was westbound on U.S. Highway 12.

The 47-year-old man driving the semi-truck was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the straight truck suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Bowdle hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Charges are pending against the driver of the straight truck, according to the release.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary. The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
