A semi-truck carrying cattle tipped over and killed one person near Stockton on Tuesday

One person died after a semi-truck carrying 60 cattle tipped over on an SUV at the intersection of Alpine Road and Highway 88 near Stockton, according to California Highway Patrol.

Around mid-day Tuesday, a cattle truck eastbound on Highway 88 and a Toyota SUV northbound on Alpine were approaching the intersection. The truck was approaching a yellow light, and the light had just turned green for the SUV, Sgt. Dennis Crutchfield said.

"The two came into the intersection at the same time, (and) the truck and trailer overturned on top of the driver's compartment of the SUV," Crutchfield said.

The SUV driver died at the scene.

Investigators did not identify the victim, who was the SUV's only occupant, Crutchfield said. The driver of the big rig suffered minor injuries, he said.

Ron Stevens said he heard the wreck around 11:45 a.m.

"I looked through the orchard, and I could see the trailer bouncing. I ran out calling 911," the Stockton man said. "When I got out here, where I could see, the semi-truck was laying across the road on its side, and there was a car pinned under the trailer."

Stevens said he's seen other people die in collisions on the same corner of the street.

"Hearing the crash and identifying the noise, (I thought) this is a bad one," he said.
