Semi-truck driver from North Carolina seriously injured in Interstate 55 crash Friday

Illinois State Police said a semi-truck driver was airlifted to a hospital after a single-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 55 in Montgomery County late Friday night.

ISP referred to the injuries of the driver, 23-year-old Gary V. Collins of Lenoir, N.C., as "serious."

According to a preliminary incident report, the truck drifted towards the left side of the highway, striking several construction barriers and a guardrail face. The driver then went through an embankment, striking a bridge support and an on-sight crane.

The wreck happened at milepost 67 north of the Raymond/Taylorville/Hillsboro exit just before 10 p.m. Friday.

ISP didn't provide the hospital information.

There were no other vehicles involved.
