SAULT STE. MARIE — United States Senator for Michigan Gary Peters will be the featured keynote speaker at the 75th annual Lake Superior State University commencement ceremony on Saturday.

Peters' communications staff said in a statement that “Peters will highlight the unique education graduates have received that blends technical skills with traditional liberal arts studies to develop a workforce that is well prepared to lead our state through the challenges of the future — from protecting the Great Lakes to innovation in medicine, engineering, manufacturing, and more.”

This commencement will celebrate the graduates from the fall and winter 2021, spring 2022 and summer 2022 semesters.

A total of 387 graduates will be awarded 522 degrees of different kinds, including 347 bachelor's degrees and 159 associate degrees along with 16 certificates.

The ceremony will also include the annual announcement of the winner of this year's LSSU Distinguished Teaching Award.

The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. Saturday May 7, in Taffy Abel arena. There will be no COVID-19 restrictions. A livestream of the event will be available to anyone who cannot attend in person at livestream.com/lakestate/commencement2022.

Because of the senator's presence there will be increased security at the event, and attendees' bags will be searched upon entry. For security purposes, only the bell tower entrance will be available for use.
