The Virginia Senate Democratic Women’s Caucus slammed Sen. Joe Morrissey Wednesday and urged residents to vote for his opponent in the upcoming primary.

“His public behavior has, for years, drawn attention to himself rather than the needs of his constituents,” the group wrote in a statement. “The six members of VSDWC call for accountability and personal responsibility.”

Calling his behavior “divisive and destructive,” the caucus urged residents to support his opponent, Lashrecse Aird, a former member of the House of Delegates.

“Aird has the experience, grassroots familiarity, and temperament to serve the constituents of (Senate District) 13 well and effectively,” the group wrote.

The statement is a rare rebuke from Morrissey’s fellow Democrats, who have largely stayed silent amid his many controversies.

Morrissey, D-Richmond, has survived numerous public scandals throughout his time in office, including a stint in jail several years ago for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The legislator was accused of having sex with his teenage secretary, whom he later married and fathered children with. The couple, now separated, are in midst of a nasty custody battle.

Earlier this month, a reporter with Virginia Scope covering their public feud said Morrissey subpoenaed him for alleged text messages between the reporter and Morrissey’s estranged wife. A judge has since rejected the subpoena.

Members of the caucus include Sen. Mamie Locke of Hampton, Sen. Louise Lucas of Portsmouth, Sen. Jennifer Boysko of Fairfax, Janet Howell of Fairfax, Ghazala Hashmi of Richmond, and Barbara Favola of Arlington.
