Sen. John Braun Issues Statement on Supreme Court Roe v. Wade Leak

May 4—On Tuesday, State Sen. John Braun, R-Centralia, released a statement on a leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinion that indicates the Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that placed limits on the legal restrictions states can place on abortion.

The Republican state Senate leader began his statement by recognizing that the potential Supreme Court decision would have little impact on abortion laws in Washington state. He also added that regardless of party, "fewer abortions should be a common goal."

Braun then turned to the leak itself, declaring that a leak was not only illegal, but "an unscrupulous attempt to manipulate public opinion," before calling for understanding between those on opposing sides of what he called "a very contentious issue."

"People on both sides of this issue are very passionate about their beliefs. Hopefully this is a moment where we can all show grace," Braun said in closing his statement.
